1.02 Level IV Services AAP Programs

Key Points: Fairfax County Public Schools offers a continuum of advanced academic services. There is an Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) curriculum framework that outlines resources, units, strategies, and practices designed to challenge and engage advanced learners. Level IV services provide students with an advanced academic curriculum in the four core subject areas of mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies all day and every day. The AAP curriculum and instructional strategies may be used to challenge, engage, and develop 21st Century skills in all learners.

4.03 Student Discipline Analysis Report

Keypoints:  At the April 9, 2011, work session, the School Board and Superintendent identified student discipline issues in the following areas:

  1. Data Collection and Reporting
  2. Time Line Between Discipline Incident and Decision
  3. Prescription Medication Violations
  4. School Reassignments
  5. Other Hearings Office Changes
  6. Provide Instructional Support During Suspension
  7. Parental Notification and Communication
  8. Alternatives to Suspension

The School Board directed the Superintendent to recommend changes to the student disciplinary process and return to the School Board in Spring 2012 with an interim report on the impact of these changes. The Superintendent will present his analysis and recommendations to the School Board at the April 16, 2012, Work Session. The School Board is also scheduled to review the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook (Regulations 2601) in preparation for approval for the 2012-2013 school year.

6.02 Virtual Learning

Keypoints: Technological advances has led to commercial ventures and legislative action in Virginia regarding virtual learning The FCPS Virtual Schooling Task Force, consisting of many stakeholders, was formed last year to examine current research and practices The task force recommends incorporating virtual learning in three key domains:

  • Incorporate blending learning into each classroom
  • Establish a virtual high school
  • Create schools of innovation
